Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

We are very proud to offer a thriving kitchen garden program, supported through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.  Our community garden, sitting adjacent to the front entrance on Newcombe Street, allows students to plant, grow and harvest a wide range of produce.  With the support of our local Portarlington ‘Garden Gnomes’, who are regular features in our community garden, students have the opportunity to utilise this fresh produce to create dishes and experience new food they have had the chance to see through from seed to plate.

Our kitchen garden program empowers students with life-long knowledge of growing and enjoying healthy food.  The program develops our students hands-on experience in learning about:

  • The growing and harvesting of fruit and vegetables
  • The value of organic growing principles
  • Water conservation
  • Environmental sustainability

Our garden classes foster teamwork and patience.  Classes cover garden planning, seasonal planting, soil management and plant health, seed saving, managing compost bins and worm farms.  Students are introduced to gardening tools and learn how to use them.  With a community garden filled with herbs, vegetables, fruits and a range of indigenous edible plants.

The school has a well equipped classroom kitchen which overlooks views of the beautiful bay and our community garden.  Students have the privilege of using harvested produce from our community garden to prepare healthy, vegetarian seasonal snacks and meals, whilst enjoying a meal together and learning vital kitchen life skills.

Our kitchen garden program sets out to provide students with positive food habits through fun, hands-on learning.
